The Effects of Antenatal Depression and Women’s Perception of Having Poor Health on Maternal Health Service Utilization in Northern Ghana

Secondary analysis of a cluster randomized controlled trial

This study examined the effects of antenatal depression and women’s self-perceived poor health on maternal health service utilization, which had rarely been done in previous studies. We found evidence that self-perceived poor health, especially among women with moderate or severe antenatal depression, was associated with lower likelihood of maternal health service use in Ghana. We discussed several programmatic strategies.
